Hello you crazy 61 ers'
I can't believe how many of us (you) have hung in with James and Sam. It's been a while for me so I am just getting back into the swing of inhabiting the site and listening to good music again. So what has everyone been up to? I myself had to take a break as I was spending way to much time refreshing the less than ten bumps page (trying to play the game.) I'm over that now and just looking for some good tunes. Here is what I found when I came back.

Groups?!?
Seriously. I really thought we were trying to avoid groupthink. Bah, I'll skip this one as I'll probably just get angry. I did join the MaxBumps group though.

Still Underrated:

if:then:goto has been one of my favorite artists on the site since I have arrived and these tracks continue to stand out for me amidst all of the other artists. I highly recommend checking them out.
This next track is just bad ass.

New Favorites:
I have known of Bobby Conn for a long time and this song has always cracked me up. The borrowed Jackson 5 sounds and the lyrics about giving head the man are the spotlights. Since I just wanted to get my feet wet after being away for a while I will leave you with this song.

Hasta la pasta!

Keep On Keepin' On

As I enter my eighth month here at the sixty one I am noticing quite a few things. It was apparent a few months ago that a camaraderie was being formed when many of the users that are involved with the site changed their avatars to little gerbils (or was it hamster?) during a period of user confusion. I admit to feeling as if I was being experimented on and even jokingly brought this up here. Now I am seeing this camaraderie blossom into something more meaningful. I know that this has been brought up elsewhere and that all of the pictures are shown on the Max Bumps site but I would like to say that I am truly proud of the way the community has embraced supergrover and his battle with cancer. In the midst of all the changes the site has gone through and the few who make it difficult to want to stay at the site I find that this involvement and support of supergrover is an amazing reason to stay. Why wouldn't you want to be around such good people? Supergrover, I can admit that I do not know you well and that my contributions and efforts pale in comparison to others but I would like to say that each time I log on to the site I think of you and wish you and your family the best. Your humor has always made me laugh and I know it will be the thing that gets you through this trying time. Keep on laughing and keep on keepin' on.

More From the Underrated Vault

Hammer No More The Fingers

I find it very hard to believe that this song hasn't gotten more attention. It has all the elements that should make for a home page song. A lesser known band with a great hook and good vocals.

The Buddyrevelles

Here is a band that has had some good success on the 61 with a track that got left behind. I don't know who the hell Rodney is and I don't dream of men much but I think I get this song.

Bidding on Revives
This is a relatively new (last hour or so as I am writing this) feature on the site. Already there are a few tracks that have bids over 7000 points. I am curious to see how this plays out as it was very difficult to get a revive before though the purchase price may make it down right impossible for some people. All that being said I would like to dare someone to bid all of their points on a revive. Race to Zero not so difficult style.

Bon Sportage
That's all that I have for now. I am hoping to post more often now that I am out of class and find myself with a little more free time. If you have any thoughts on new features (bites) let me know and I would be happy to give em a go.

First off, this is the first I am hearing of supergrover's battle with cancer--my heart goes out to him and his family.

Second, good call on both songs--I'd also like to throw Rauchaube and The Upstairs Room (Or, at the very least, the song Bow to Your Sensei) into the mix. First of June needs more recognition as well, and that's not JUST a plug 'cause I was first on one of her songs.

Keep on keepin' on. :)

Guess Who's Back?

Hello again all! It's been a few weeks since I've been able to sit down and share my thoughts with you on the music that has been rolling into thesixtyone. In this time period there has been uproar over the limitation of songs that an artist can upload and a complete reversal (Bug were told) that allowed some piano player to upload 30 tracks before reaching level 5. Only a few things remain constant at thesixtyone. They are:

  1. AnnieB
  2. Great music
  3. Glenn Case wall postings

Now that we have that out of the way, let's listen to some music.

Two Short Album Reviews (The return of Non-Fuzz)

Born Ruffians

This up and coming band has created an album that is sure to be a mainstay in a lot of peoples players.

The first single of the album is "Hummingbird" and is a catchy and frantic track that speeds down the road of suicide without blinking an eye. That's the way that I interpret anyway. Luke Lalonde has an interesting vocal style and doesn't seem to care if he annunciates well and for me that adds to the charm. I'll warn you now that that front half of the album doesn't deliver nearly enough compared to the back end. I maintain that all should give it a listen though.

Vampire Weekend

I was a bit hesitant to check these guys out after I had heard their cover of Exit Music For a Film by Radiohead. No one really does Radiohead any justice and it nearly kept me from hearing this great band. I'm amazed that this band can sound like so many artists (Paul Simon - Graceland Days, The Kinks, The Police and many others) while still maintaining a very unique sound. This one has been stuck in my car stereo for weeks. Literally, when I hit the eject button it won't come out.

Can I Get Some Love?

Bye Polar Bear is my underrated artist of the week. With great covers of Neutral Milk Hotel and Leonard Cohen and some interesting original stuff I can see this guy at the top of the61 artist list.

Ready For Revival

The Acorn

One of my favorite acts on the61, The Acorn, have been on this site from the beginning. All of their songs have posted and should be ready for some new ears on the site. Give them a listen.

Pasta

Time again to say goodbye. It seems as if we are in for many changes on the61 but as long as the music stays great I will not be going anywhere.

Hasta la pasta!

Don't speak too soon on the subject of 'Glenn Case wall postings' being a constant.

I realize that I've gained the reputation of being a 'wall spammer'. It was never my intent to annoy people with my messages, but I am seeing that it has. So, I apologize to those I have irritated.

ROCK!

Glenn Case

Glenn, Please don't reduce my constants to two! It is nice to see artists passionate about their music.
And the "Rock" kills me every time.

Passionate about music in general. Not just my own. It's why I was so hell bent on asking Jessie Grace and Brother Machine to join thesixtyone, and why I was so excited when they actually did.

It's why I was so quick to try to tell people about Deshead when I didn't feel that his numbers were reflecting how good he actually is.

If nothing else, I'm actually more passionate about good music that isn't my own. I found myself trying to thank everyone that bumped me because I feel fortunate that anyone takes time to listen to any of my music when there are so many other artists out there. It was an overwhelming task even when I was using a template of sorts. Leaving a personalized message for each person would have been insanity, but it would have been a much better idea.

As far as my infamous signature, it's something that has stuck with me since the days of being glued to a show that was on MTV called Sifl and Olly. At this point it just feels unnatural for me to exclude it from posts.

As we know, thesixtyone's going through growing pains so I've been a little reluctant in trying to bring other artists to the site recently, but now I'm even more reluctant because a connection to me might be considered a bad thing. It sucks.

ROCK!

Glenn Case

Glenn,
I think what is bugging people is the length and the frequency of wall posts. People like your music a lot and you would get the bumps regardless. You're talented and your music is really good. I know a few people who have stopped bumping your songs due to the wall spam. It's kind of like the emails I get from "Stop Gun Violence Coalition". As much as I agree with their cause, they email me like every freakin' day.

As far as the 'ROCK!' tag goes. Seriously good tag. It's simple, to the point, and everyone knows it's you. Keep the tag, the tag is good.

oh dear, i've made the list too. lol. and i agree, "dents" should be revived again. it's one of my ultimate favorites on the site!

Hey Michele,

Thank you for the compliments, and more importantly for the insight. I will take it to heart.

Time for me to stop de-railing this post, and allow some people to talk about how great the songs are that eatabagel mentioned. There are some solid choices in there, and I bumped many of them myself.

ROCK!

Glenn - I agree with michele, although I love "I am the President..." so much the wall spam is the 2nd thing I associate you with now. That you recognize it has bugged people also makes you and the spam cool in my eyes. I can't stress enough how much I love that song. People are now annoyed with me because my house has a revolving door but everyone who comes in has to take the detour to my room and hear that song. I'm a sound spammer, what can I say?

The Incredible Bagel aka eatabagel is also a certified hero. The mention in Tuesday's Bagel Bites was worth more than 100 bumps. Seriously, it makes me want to send you cryptic messages of thanks in my songs to come.

Bagel, I agree Bye Polar Bear is a highly underrated artist on t61. I was ecstatic to discover one of his songs, 900 Miles many moons ago and still love it to this day.

Introduction

Hello all! Welcome to my weekly or monthly or whenever I choose to do it blog on the sixtyone. You can expect to see my thoughts on great songs, shitty songs and just about anything I feel the need to talk about. Please feel free to comment on anything you see here that you like or dislike. I can't promise that i will care what you think though.

Let's get started.

Most Promising Artist

After the Ice

A three piece hailing from the UK have all the tools to storm the 61 as well as the music world. "It Happens All the Time" is driven by a great guitar lick and some powerful vocals that pierce into your brain. They originally had four tracks up but misread some advice and took those songs down (you can see what happened here). I am eagerly anticipating the return of these tracks and look forward to a possible interview with these guys.

Best Band That Is No Longer Together

Data

I can do nothing but cry about the fact that we will hear nothing more from this band. Perhaps we can beg them to get back together. It does however seem as if one of the members is still making music with another one of my favorite acts on the sixtyone. They are called Tan Vampires.

WTF!

I have no idea what to say about this. If you want to hear more awful songs you can torture yourself with this terrific playlist. Thanks Batface!

Underrated Pick of the Week

These guys are my pick for the most underrated band on the site as well. Every song is solid. And they need some Major Major attention. (Lame i know.)

Salad or is it Salud

Thanks for checking out my tasty bagel bites! There will be more to come as the music keeps rolling in. At this point I have to officially thank Sam and James for inviting us all to enjoy some great music. The community is great and I look forward to the future of the site.

Batface, you are the bomb. I would say "Rock" but that is already in use.

Salad.

I'll second the sad data sentiment. Their music is utterly awesome and even though I like Tan Vampires, they're just not as good as data is/was, to me. Whoever is behind the data account assured me that he/she was looking for a place to sell their EP(s), so I'm keeping an eye on that development.

I was there for the After The Ice 4 song stampede, and also for the removal of 3 of their songs. I can vouch for the quality of those songs, and am looking forward to them coming back as well.

Are those bagel bites Pizza flavored? Mmmm...pizza bagel bites.
